Right after coming back from Costa Rica, and probably without giving my body enough time to recuperate, we decided to hike up to Soda Peaks lake in the Trapper Creek Wilderness. Several years ago, I did a training backpack to Soda Peaks a few weeks before an epic backpack to the Enchantments. Our plan was to just do an out and back. Usually this hike is reserved for a later date when snow has melted out but since this year has been pretty low, we thought that the lake would be reachable this time of year. That was my first miscalculation. The second one was not to bring shoes for snow… So Val and I started hiking up early in the morning and a quite cloudy, crappy day. The hike is completely forested so it didn’t bother us much. At lower elevations we found more water than expected with parts of the trail completely flooded. And then we found snow. At first it was just patches a few inches deep here and there but soon the snow got deep and soft. It didn’t take long for my feet to get soaking wet and cold so at about half a mile to the lake, we turned around and headed back.
